Lamprologus ocellatus

hi,
I am thinking about doing some Lamprologus ocellatus in a 20gallon long.
Would I be able to do 6 pairs?

Whats the best way to boost my pH?

What type of shells should i use?

Thanks guys!
Aaron

Hello

I think you would be ok with 6 pairs. Just make sure you have enough shells. Remember, the more surface area, the better. Sea shells ( i find) can raise your pH, but they generally adapt to pH, just make sure you introduce them slowly. As far as shells i dont know lol

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/l_ocellatus.php a great site for info on these cuties...id go for 4 pair myself as the smaller tanks are much harder to keep prestine....but good luck either way!

I've kept these fish before and they are some of my favorites. Being harem spawners, I think it would be best to keep 2M/6F.

What would you consider the most interesting of shell dwellers? I have read/heard conflicting information that Neolamprologus multifasciatus are also harem breeders but i also heard that they are mongamous. Can anyone clear that up?

I am looking for a shell dwelling harem breeder that is interesting to watch. I am open to suggestions.

As I said I am going to try them out in a twenty gallon long and if I like them enough I may move them to a 55gallon.

I haven't kept the multis, but have seen many. I prefer the look of the occies, but in terms of behavior I think they are very similar. Just go with what you like; the dietary needs and water parameters are going to be the same.
