| Is this a female Molly?
Here's another close up of two of my mollys. I'm sure the black one is male, just not sure about the orange one? |

| So I have a problem then...I don't want her to have babies while my tank is still cycling....what should I do with her? She's really fun to watch and will come right up to my fingers while I'm cleaning. |

| There's nothing you can do to stop it. Even if she hasn't bred with the male you have, she'll have bred before you got her. Even if you remove her or the male she'll still have babies. |

| Ah...now I'm sad....surely the babies won't survive while the tanking is cycling will they?
I got them at walmart and the lady said they were all males... Last edited by Lucy; June 25th, 2009 at 03:27 PM.

| It is possible for the babies to survive cycling.
And the Wal-Mart workers usually don't know alot about fish. ;-) |

| Easiest way to sex a livebearer is to look at the anal fin.
See that cylindrical organ? that's a gonopodium - only males have it.
That's the simplest way. For next time |

| If you want to keep them, you'll have to either a) put the mother in a LARGE (mollies are too big for most sizes) breeder net, b) put her in a seperate tank, or c) have tons and tons of plants in the original tank. Otherwise the babies will get eaten. Option b would be best. |

| How big of a tank? Can it be a small one? How will I know when she's ready to have the babies? |

| mollys are hardy but can get body fungus quite easily with my experience. and i'd say the second tank (breeding tank)should only be a minimum of like 5-10g |

| I bought 4 mollies 2 weeks ago, last week during the water change i found a molly fry, only 1 tho, have rescued it by placing it in a breeding net, it must have birthed days after bringing it home. My tank is still in the cycling process and the baby is surviving and growing fast, good luck with yours x |
