1-3 months of age is when sexual maturity is usually achieved, depending on many variables. Males will begin to show a gonopodium (modified anal fin shaped like a needle, and used to insemenate females.) Females will begin to show a gravid spot that is either black or clear (shows as pink because the clear gravid spot allows you to see pink insides), and they get bulkier.

ok I guess. I just hope a female that I keep doesn't turn into a late blooming male.

Ya I've got swords, platies, and mollies. The one female platy that I knew when to take out died of stress (probably) after I did a major tank clean that was needed for the health of my fish. I also lost the only sword that I knew when to pull out too. It's very frustrating. I'm currently trying to find out exactly when my mom's dwarf platy is going to give birth. I know that she gave birth around the time my molly did because I found babies about that time when I was cleaning the 10 gal tank. She's sitting in a breeder box at the moment.

actually, the maturing age for sword tails and mollies are pretty similar, there's are about between 2-3 months of age. and aside from being able to see the gonopodium. the easiest way to tell male from female is that the male has a sword on his tail, and the female doesn't.
