how to tell the difference

Ok. when I bought my fish i was told that i was buying all female dalmatian mollies. I originally only bought one and then I went back a couple of months later and bought another three. Now I have about 20 little babies swimming around and i don't know how to tell the differences between male and female. please help me.

males mollies have a distinctive "male" anal fin (as other livebearers), other than that, they might be difficult to tell from same size females. If all four are female, then it looks like you brought home one or more that was carrying. Check profiles of livebearers, look into pics, and you'll be an expert in no time as far as "sex ID" for livebearers.

What size/type is your tank(s)? Mollies can grow to 4 inches, maybe more. They might require some help to breed (like adding salt), and as far as I know, they are prompt to eat their fry. You could let "nature" take it course or maybe induce someone close into fishkeeping, or... go MTS. If you plan to keep them, you could get a fish net breeder and attach it in your tank so they have better chances to survive, also consider baby fish food.

Congratulations!

Check the first post in Sexing Livebearers for a basic visual look at the sexing of livebearers, including mollies.

it comes a little later than the anal fin but it is a definite thing distinguished between the two. If they are high/sailfin mollies, the males will get a high/sail fin to them. Their top fin will appear thicker than the females.

You might have bought all females, but female livebearers can hold sperm in their bodies for months at a time so they can get pregnate a few more times, even if you only have females.
