Aggressiveness

I give up! I'm so mad at my serpae tetra that I removed them from my 55 gallon community tank. I only had 3, wanted to buy more but LFS were out. They have chewed a silver dollar's tail almost completely off. I put 4 white clouds in yesterday and this morning, 3 of them already had nipped places on their tailfins. I cant believe these things were so aggressive, no place for them in my tank!

I had similar problems with mine, I had read that more is best with Serpes so I put 10 into my once peaceful community tank and then watched them nip at every single fish in there. Its a 60gal long so they were not crowded at the time.

I moved them out into their own tank and let them fight amongst themselves but they seem to have sorted a pecking order out now and are behaving in a species tank. But the tank isnt really big enough for the 10 of them and needs a lot of careful watching and maintanence.

End result though is that as we are having trouble with the betta tank maintaining an even temp we are going to return them to the LFS and move the Beta into their tank he will enjoy the extra 10 litres I am sure.

Worst fish ever! My first tank I started with these guys with the recommendation from the "wonderful" people at Petland.

I had 3 Serpaes, they ate 3 neons, 1 platy, and 2 serpaes. I had1 left and took him back to the store.

they aren't all that bad i had a little problem with mine at first but they left my cories alone... if it wasn't for the huge pH drop i would probably have bought more... just gotta give them time to adjust... and plenty room for other fish to hide while they pick their place... also large schools tend to be nicer and large schools of other fish tend to be safer... if you have 2 neons then yes a carniverous fish that is in a pack of 3-6 is gonna see lunch but if there are 6-10 neons and 3-6 serpae you will tend to see a lot more tolerance between them... think of international politics... little countries get picked on while bigger countries talk like they are angry at each other...

Glad I read this...I have 3 serpaes with 3 rasboras and 3 mollies...my mollies are hiding at the bottom of the tank and I noticed the tetras are darting around and I think they're scaring the mollies. I started out a few months ago with the sane set up but only 2 mollies. I left for two hours and got back to 2 dead mollies. Could the tetras have done that? Should I take the tetras out into their own tank?
