Egg crate aquarium cover

I am going to make my own lid for my saltwater tank. I am going to make it out of egg crates from home imp. Store. The reason for this is I'd like to keep a purple fire gobie and they like to jump from tanks... So they tell me. I was worried because my tank would get to hot if I used a regular aquarium hood along with my lighting. The egg crates have square holes to at lest let the air cerculate. My question is should I get white ones or black. I figure white is better because it won't block the light as much as the black. Would color make a diffrence. Just trying to get the moust of my lighting. Thank u.

Good morning Carols. Sounds like an interesting idea. White reflects light so I suggest the white. (Black absorbs light). Send us some pictures when you're done.

Good Luck with project.

Dont mean as in negtive term but you may be surprised when even those tiny oles are big enough for certain fsh to escape as I found out.

It shouldnt be that expensive nor difficult to work with EggCrate. Hope all goes well!

Agree with cerianthus (as usual!). Hubby and I had a Carpenter's flasher wrasse jump out of the tank AFTER we made the eggcrate lid. We were so disappointed to lose this beautiful fish. That's why I linked you to the thread on Atl Reef Club forums for the bird netting and window frame lid. You can layer the bird netting as necessary to stagger the grid pattern and make the holes smaller, all without blocking light in any noticeable way. We've had great luck with the bird netting lid.
