checked the impeller - the little fans right?! cleared it all out... waiting for sand to settle before putting filters back in... put heater on, guessing the water should be ok for mister stripey damsel.. woo i know what he is now

Don't rush into anything.

First of all, do you have marine salt and a refractometer now? Both are really important. I think you said 50L out of 190 were saltwater, which means the water has too little salt in the aquarium.
If you don't have them, call around to local pet stores and check if they have any. Many places that don't sell marine fish will still sell the equipment you need to keep your aquaria going.

When you say the filter is stinking, what does that mean? Does it smell like burning or is it just a "fishy" smell? If it's the fishy smell, that should go away.

As for the source of the burning, I have one idea. What kind of lights does the unit have? Are they fluorescent or something else?

the burning smell is coming from the filter.. And now its no longer working, so gathering it was that. Water doesnt smell of burning any more either, since i took the filters out last night. I cant get to the LFS till later on in the day...

Mystery solved.

I would wait to move the fish into his new home until you can get the water fully set up. It's going to take some monkeying around to add the salt to the tank (most people usually do it in a bucket before adding it to the tank).

kati, Since you have no live rock I would try to start buying some. The live sand is a plus already. Now the important thing is getting you tank cycled asap, due to the fact you already have fish. Please read this: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm . I would recommend using option #6 (Biospira). You will need live rock or a sponge filter (sponge media in you power filter) for the bacteria to colonize on.

yea its a juwel 190 bow front and i have sponge filters... that was in it previously.

Great setup. If the sponges don't look too old, just rinse them in fresh water (no soap) and you good to go.

yea i did already they were in it yesterday... water starting to clear a little and mister stripey damsel is still alive... still havent been able to get a hold of any salt for the tank yet :S they said wouldnt be till tuesday.
