1. the sump can be as large as you can accomadate either under the tank or run in to a garage as many people do ,,, a refugium is a section in a sump or a HOB type that grows pods for your tank aiding in feeding fish and benefical to your system (google copepods)

2. try that well known auction site and see if you can get some bargains , i have had the same skimmer for a couple of years now and bought second hand and is still running fine never had to replace anything just clean every now and then ,, i also bought my phosphate reactor from a tank breakdown and this to has lasted about 9 months with no problems and was purchased for next to nothing ,

so happy bargain hunting

Hi Matt,
Depending on the set up your looking for.. SW=$$$
You can save $ by getting second hand tanks and use 1 for the sump.
I am in the process of setting up our new marine tank, so far this is what we have.
Main tank 1200mm x 450mm x 600mm high 10mm glass $500
Sump 1000 x 450 x 450mm 6mm glass $150
Timber for the stand $120
Micro Aqua Protein Skimmer rated for 1200lt per hr $380
Equipment still required
T5 HO lighting $450
Return pump $200
Sand & rocks $100 ( using dead rock and cycling using ammonia method )
Plumbing $50
Power head $50
Algaes $50
Seahorses 8 x $65= $520
So the total will be around $2320.00

Hi Matt,
Living south of the river, Parmelia.. Just moved there 2 months ago.
The power heads are small, this is due to the tank being set up for seahorses, not to much flow.
Best place I have found price wise is Avid Aquaria, Shop 2/ 213 Railway Ave
Kelmscott WA, 6111 Ask for Steve.

My age 45
