Quarantine tank-size?

what should the size of a QT be? i was thinking of setting up a 10G and just putting it next to a 55G(not set up yet). i no it would hard to keep it with the right "specs" of the 55G but would a 10G even work. also how long should i keep a fish in there? some people say 2 weeks(most common) but others say longer or shorter. How safe is not having a QT at all? Or if i used it as a place to give fresh water "dips"(heard it was good, not sure on this either)?

Thanks
(i posted this in another thread, sorry not sure where it should be)

You really should have a QT for 2 reasons. New fish should be in QT for 2 weeks before being introduced to the main tank. Also, you want to be able to move an individual fish back out of the main tank if it were to get sick. You do not want to treat the entire display tank. 10 gallons is fine in most cases since the fish are only in there for a limited time. Unless you have a full grown angel or something similarly huge.
