Interesting article on "puffing"

http://biomechanics.bio.uci.edu/_htm...ish/puffer.htm

I found this fascinating.... others may not so much.
But, if you needed any more reason to not make a puffer puff, there you go.

Hi Pink, cool article.
We went to the Mystic Sea Aquarium last Saturday. Had a great time. Did not take pictures. (love you pictures) I noticed that it would have been nice to have more information on the fish. I watch a puffer of some type, blow against the sandy bottom looking for food. He did this often. And darn if they didn't say what kind he was. He was kind of square looking and not very big, a few inches. But he was very determined in his search for something left behind in the sand or maybe snails or worms?
About the lack of information, they did say they were redesigning things with more to come.

Are you sure it was a puffer, and not a boxfish? Cowfish in particular are famous for that behavior that you describe. But they are very closely related.

It could be. They didn't have any description of the fish. To me he looked like a puffer.
I'll have to look it up and see. Does a puffer check the bottom like that?

Yes, some of them will. It was just how you said he was "square looking" that made me think boxfish.

Yes Pink I found it, he was a box fish. Very cute little guy. And he was square looking.

I'd love to have one, they are adorable, but I wouldn't want to put all my other fish at risk...

It did read that they are semi aggressive.

Some of them are actually quite shy and peaceful. The problem is that when stressed or just recently deceased, they release a powerful toxin into the water which kills every inhabitant, including the boxfish itself.

Oh wow I didn't realize that! That would be terrible obviously. We'll just have to admire them from afar.

Yeah. I do want to have a cowfish in the future, but we'll see if it ever happens. But he'd be a lone fish in a tank of over 100gs...

I wish! But if I did have my hands on a 100+ SW tank, it'd be home for a porcupine puffer, not a cowfish. Sorry fishy

Neat link, easier to understand why puffing air is fatal...
