Puffers and reefs

I am planning on setting up a SW tank (slowly due to cost) in the coming year. We would like to have a reef setup with fish once it's all said and done. We make regular trips to That Fish Place for FW fish and supplies, and while there we take time to admire the SW fish, inverts and coral.

We LOVE the dog faced puffer, but the info card on the tank says they are "Not Reef Safe" yet I have read multiple times that they do just fine in a reef tank.

what are the potential issues? Will they eat the coral?

Anyone have experience (positive or negative) with puffers in a reef setup?

the problem with dog faced puffers is that they might eat your cleaning crew such as shrimp so you should be careful. im not sure if they will eat your corals or not but i would be careful and keep him wellfed.

hope this helps

also you should keep him in a large tank because they can get up to 13 inches long and SW fish need more room than FW fish.

have fun!

It's possible that they will eat corals. Only put a puffer in there if you're willing to potentially part with your corals.

And, to add to what midnightwolf said, not only do SW fish need more room than FW, but puffers need more room than the average SW fish.

If you ad it to a reef tank do so with caution, they will go after your clean up crew and your corals. I also agree w/ Pink, they do need a lot more room than other fish.
