hi there i'm new to saltwater but long time freshwater this is my setup and buy the way i have a hagen surface skimmer the hook's up to the filter will this work or do i need the good one i'm doing fish and live rock it look's like it's doing a good job
Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!new set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hagen is a great company. I use there food and tomorrow I am buying there powerhead for my tank. I would also buy another skimmer that takes the stuff out of the water. , Surface skimmers take out the stuff on the top like oils from your hands. The best one I heard about was the red sea prizm. It hangs on the back of the tank. Your hydrometerr will be inaccurate in a few months. Mine was always everywhere. Buy yourself a refractometer later. Its a good investment For live rock I heard 1 pound per gallon is good if your doing fish only. So far your tank looks great.
BTW cycle with a piece of cocktail shrimp not damsels
Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!new set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you think that skimmer in the pic i have will work i just got a good one off ebay i think you and me where talking about it here's a pic and if any one's looking there 30 + shipping and it come's with a power head
Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!new set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Uncured is cheaper then cured. If your curing it it will take a few weeks. Make sure every week you do 100% water changes and wait till your test show...
ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
nitrate - less than 20 ppm
PH - steady 8.0 - 8.4
Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!new set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow i did not know that thank's i think i'm going cure LG then i have a 20 G tank i think i'll try uncure in there and when it's done i'll put it in my 50G
Re: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!new set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do you think of the curved front. I thought it looked great at the store, so I ordered a 150L with curved front. Now I wonder if it doesn't distort too much to actually see the fish properly. What do you think? Are you happy with it? Looks great anyway.

Looks like my question got lost in the overall thread. Am interested in your opinion on this one.

You might want to read this: http://www.fishlore.com/profile-porcupinepuffer.htm. a 50g is probably too small for puffers it sounds like but they do have some compatible tank mates. It just will get a bit tight in there when the fish are full grown, even without the LR

armadillo,
I have a 227L (60 Gal.) bow-front and love it. Haven't noticed much distortion. They are a little harder to scrap algae off the front glass, scrappers are flat. You have to scrap left to right, not up and down. That's it though, other than that I really like the looks of a bow-front. (my 2 cents)

A few things i just caught gazing through this thread.
If you are only going to have live rock, and fish then a protein skimmer is not neccesary. Its a must though if you are going to do coral.
Puffer's are not reef safe. Most puffers pick at the coral (it must taste pretty good) I have seen puffers kept in a 24 gallon nano. You just have to watch how many fish you are putting into the tank.
A 100% water change will defeat the purpose of cycling your tank. So i dont know why inuyahsa lover said to do 100%. I live in texas and i buy live rock that comes out of other peoples tanks. Once i have bought it from a manufacturer but i guess i am saying i really dont know what you mean about cured and uncured live rock. I wouldnt pull rock directly out of the ocean and use it, if thats what uncured is. There are to many chemixals that are dumped in our ocean every day, most of them will stay with the rock for life. If you are just now adding live rock after you have "cycled" your tank you will have to wait again or add live rock peices slowly because live rock will make your tank cycle again. Some of the life dies in transportation which will make your ammonia spike so if you are planning on putting 50 pounds of live rock in there you need to wait for fish and animals. If you are doing it right when you start off your tank it will help your tank cycle faster.
I would do a 20% water change weekly.
Mantis shrimp are not as bad as people make them to be. In fact they are beautifull... the chance's of you getting them in live rock i dont think are that great. I know of several people who have tanks dedicated to manti's.
