SHOWLR tank is coming along!

Lorabell is encouraging (read enabling) me as I set up my first saltwater tank.
The tank is a 29 gallon Ecilpse tank. I set the tank up one week ago today. I used 1.5 inches of fine sand as my substrate, 11 lbs of live rock, two cups of live sand and added ammonia. This was all done under the guidence (sorta) of a LFS guy. I mixed my own water and have a salinity of 1.023. The guy (sorta weird) said I didn't need a test kit yet and I'm not sure why. How will I know when the tank is cycled? Any help with next steps would be appreciated. I'm taking an on-line course from Ocean Rider on Sea Horses and so I'm also waiting for their adviceas well. I have found another Saltwater store but will not be able to get into town until next weekend. I think I will take some water with me and see if they can test it. Can I test with a freshwater test kit for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?

Thank you Lori. I'm very happy to be your first enablee. I can't wait to get the seahorses into the tank. I will be adding a few plastic plants to the mix as well. I ordered them on line and they are not here yet sowhen they arive it will give me one more thing to do to prepare for my horses. I really can't believe that I am going to have a seahorse tank, its like a dream!
