Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Ahhhh that is just fabulous!
I meant the wall of live rock - is it just one big piece or lots of smaller ones? I wish i could pay you to come round and aquascape mine! Not my strong point sadly

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

The wall is just a bunch of small rocks. The purple is starting to come out more now. Plus I bought a turbo snail last week ... he's great at cleaning
all the green algae off of everything !

I am a little worried about the live rocks falling over and cracking the glass ... I live in So. Calif. (earthquakes ).
Any suggestions ?

The LFS owner wants me to buy another 60 lbs. of live rock. I told him "where will the fish swim" LOL .

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Nice tank, it looked like you had that clear protein skimmer in the beginning, did you take it out now?

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Yeah ... It's gone, it in a box next to my hood filter. I have a CSS-65 now. The Berlin Air-Lift worked, just not as good as the my new skimmer. I'm old school when it come to aquarium equipment. Protein skimmers weren't around 20+ years ago when I started in the hobby. My friend owned a Tropical fish store back then. All of his saltwater tanks ran undergravel filters, sand and shell substrate, bleached coral ... The whole tank looked bright white ! LOL

I'm a convert now. Live rock, protein skimmer and good current is foundation to a stable SW tank. Not so sure about the DSB yet.
Do some research on small nano skimmers ... Before you spend your $$$$$.

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Wow! Looks like your tank is coming along nicely. Nice job. Do you know the scientific name for the blue tree coral? I've not seen one look like that before... Very nice looking. Just wondering if it's one that would need metal halides or vho bulbs?

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Don't know the scientific name for the blue tree coral ... I will ask the LFS were I bought on Saturday. As for the lighting ... I'm pretty sure the LFS owner told me my lighting was enough. Of course LFS's like bending the truth a lot. LOL (maybe I should take my own advise ... and do my own research .. LOL)
So far it's doing fine.

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

I think the rule is 4 watt per gallon but dont quote me on that!
I only have 60 watt in a 40 gallon so I'm trying to save up for some really good overhead luminaires but i keep having to fork out cash on my car...grr!

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

wow!!!! facinating to see it develop. thinking of joining the salty world...... so having a nosey around the salty boards to see what i can learn!!

bit scary though with rock + glass + earthquakes!! have you asked local people what they do? they're probably the best ones to know about earthquakes and how to prepare for them! whats your lfs do? do they have rocks in tank? can you put some plants behind the rocks to cushion between thr rocks and the glass? maybe the perspex tanks are better for your area?!

good luck and keep up the good work! keep the pics coming. i love them!!

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

The "watts per gallon" rule doesn't really work for most... It really depends on the light intensity, the depth of the tank and how much lighting is reaching the animal, coral or plant.

WOW!!! that is definitly a beautiful setup. I haven't tried my hand at saltwater yet, but you make me want to run out and buy a new tank and try!

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

Thanks for all the positive comments. As for the lighting ... I will be upgrading it soon, I need to get pricing on a wood canopy hood.
Not sure if I will spend the extra money for MH, or just go with T5 lighting. What are your thoughts ?

Re: My 60 gal. bow-front

If you can afford to get the better lighting then do it - it opens a whole lot of extra possibilities!
