The "watts per gallon" rule doesn't really work for most... It really depends on the light intensity, the depth of the tank and how much lighting is reaching the animal, coral or plant.
Thanks for all the positive comments. As for the lighting ... I will be upgrading it soon, I need to get pricing on a wood canopy hood.
Not sure if I will spend the extra money for MH, or just go with T5 lighting. What are your thoughts ?

oh no, hope its comes on soon! do you have gas. can you do water changes with warmed water from the gas to keep temp up?
You can often draw water right out of your hot water heater, even without power. There is a garden hose spout on the bottom of the tank, designed to empty the tank, but you can get a bucket of water at a time and carefully add to your tank. I realize you have salt water, so there would be complications.
Here at our house, we run on generator power. No electric lines come to the house at all. This is what I do. We have a big 15 KW generator, which is wired into our house just like up town. It takes approx. $30 a day to run on diesel. So in the times I don't need the water pump for the dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, or other big electric needs, I run a little 2000 watt Honda gas generator. It is outside, quiet and runs all day on just a few gallons of gas. We do NOT have it wired into the house, but my husband drilled a hole through the wall and we ran a cable in with power for my fish tank, the TV and computer. That was I can run on $7 a day on gas. It runs my tank heater, filters, and lights no problem. You CANNOT just plug a generator into your plug-in and power your house, because it would power your electric poll also and could kill someone working on your power. There is a legal way to do it, but you would have to get a licensed electrician to do it for you and that costs $$$$$.
So sorry, how many hours was it out? I bet it wasn't just the temperature, but ammonig etc that built up. It seems if it isn't one thing it's another. Hope the tank recovers without any more loss.
Now that mention it. I bought the Odyssea 250 watt MH fixture with the new electronic ballast. 440 watts total. What a difference. The only thing is the free
10K MH light is very yellow. Trying to buy a 14K Phoenix MH bulb. Very happy so far. Love the way the light shimmers.

Before the fish police comment .... He eats live copepods (that I buy at the LFS), live brine shrimp, live baby brine shrimp
(which I hatch every other day) and flying fish eggs ( orange fish roe .. Masago in an Asian market) ... Plus I have a 10 gallon refugium, and 90 LBS of live rock now.
I hope so ...! HM is 250 watts + 192 watts of actinic CF's. Tank depth is 21". I'm using a ReefLux 12k bulb on the MH.
As for the Mandarin, he's great ... I made sure he would eat live brine shrimp before I made the purchase at my LFS. He eats
anything the floats by him. If it looks like it's moving... It must be food. Also when I feed the tank BBS (baby brine shrimp)
everything in the tank tries to eat them. Even the amphipods come out, while the lights are on ...!!!

Thanks - Yes everything was purchased from five or six local fish stores. . As for anemones .. I'm looking myself. One of the LFS had a rose bubble tip he tried to sell me. I didn't like the color, It was brown with pink tips. Looking back I should have bought it. I might try an online vendor next.
Your tanks kinda small for a hippo tang and it may cause probs down the road with excess nutrients and possible aggression between the yellow and hippo tangs as they mature.
