I bought the tank here in japan a little over a year ago, the guys at the fish store was explaining to me about the filtration system on the tank. the pump intself is inside the tank, it pumps up the water to the sump box through two
PVC pipes. At the other end of the box there is another PVC pipe that leads back into the tank. Their is about a 7 inch difference between the waterline of the tank and the outlet of the PVC pipe so it creates a really nice waterfall effect, it keeps the water really oxyegenated. As far as the media goes I use the eheim substrat pro. Its actually a very effecient set up. As far as the results that I see by using this set up, with me being in the military i know my wife does not keep up with water changes and so on, so when i am gone for a few months at a time i am very surprised to come back and see my tank almost just as nice as when i left.
