I have been cycling a new 29 gallon tank the past couple of weeks using live rock. The cycling process finished a couple of days ago, so yesterday I went and obtained the first inhabitant for the new tank. You will never guess what my kids want to name the thing. He/she is a true percula, and has already started eating, which I take to be a good sign. So far though he has shown no interest in the rock whatsoever...pretty much just hangs out in the top left of the tank, with an occasional foray to the far away waters of the right side of the tank.
I would like to eventually, but it is a ways off. My current lighting is no where near adequate for that, and I still have lots of research to do before taking that step. Not to mention finding a likely bank to knock off to fund the upgrades.
sgould,
Sounds like you've been doing your homework ! An anemone needs a mature tank (6 months old +). Even that doesn't guarantee success. Go slow ... It's not a race. Your tank looks great !
sounds like you've been doing yuor homeowrk too and if i ever got a saltwater i would get a clown and a moorish idol( alough a friend of mines dad has a saltwater tank and had 6 but died he said there nearly impossible to keep though) , a blue tang etc. to get the cast of finding nemo lol :P Callum!

ahh.. i learn something new.. when i'm ready to do a SW tank, i'm sure i'll be asking you and our other SW members a lot as well as researching, but i don't mind learning a bit now either. i'll remember that.. and that's 6 months from the tank start or 6 months from the addition of live rock and/or fish, inverts, etc?
About 6 months from the tank start is a good rule of thumb. Some tanks stabilize sooner, some later. It's when your tank parameters are the same week after week. (FLBettaCouple - Come join the fun ! )

LOL.. well, if i could do a successful breeding of L046 Zebra Plecos, maybe the funds raised by selling the babies would let us get a SW tank.
Those are beautiful fish ...! How much do they go for ?
they run about a minimum of $200 each i think. we don't have a pair yet.. i won't buy them until i've got a perfectly setup tank ready, cycled and exactly what would be most condusive to encouraging them to breed.. lots of research ahead, but i can't undertake the L046 breeding until after we move anyway, so i have some time.
Cool looks really good. I know what you mean by the change in lights, when I recieved my reef lighting it looks so much better. What else are your plans for the tank?
If your lucky you can find zebra plecs for a hundred or under, though theirs no gurantee they will breed. A mated pair is 400-600

yea, i think they got mixed into the thread when i mentioned funding a SW tank with proceeds from a L046 breeding.. i just got a tank almost the same size as yours and making it a saltwater is an idea, but it must have cost you a good bit of money to set this tank up.

It's not that expensive, especially if you go ebay or basic setup, see
stop it already
I constantly struggle with keeping my tank well balanced. I'm a big overfeeder. Corals that have died in my tank were from the heat, being in poor shape when I purchased them and poor water conditions. Things I learned the hard way. I try to warn others about. Like those before me.
