Specific Fish to stir up Sand?

I'm trying to look for a specific fish that likes to play in the sand on the bottom. I'm going to have live sand and I think its important to have a guy keeping things moving down there so harmful toxins don't gather and form over time. I can't have a wrasse as they won't fit with the community.

Re: Specific Fish to stir up Sand?

I know nothing of saltwater, but perhaps some sort of snail or other invertebrate that you could put in there? I don't know whats in the community, so they might just get gobbled up, but I know a lot of freshwater people put in Malaysian trumpet snails to keep their sandy substrate from getting stagnate.

Anyway, hope someone who knows better speaks up. Good luck!

what about gobies or blennies! I heard that they go along the bottem sometimes and pick up the sand in their mouth to get food out, and to make a little home in the sand they will move the sand in their mouth to spit it out somewhere else.

Thanks guys! That link is excellent and I was thinking Goby's or Blennys too. I don't get my tank for a week and then have to wait to cycle so I'm trying to plan this perfectly. Been doing tons of research on fish and what to avoid in terms of conflict. Tank is 100 gallons.

If I am not mistaken, the cleaner wrasse is a good comunity fish that helps keep your fish clean. Is that correct?

I guess blennies or goby's is a good option. I have a sand sifting star fish and he does a good job - he's huge! I also bought a bunch of nassarius snails frrom ebay (much cheaper than the lfs) and they do a great job too
