jellyfish

I'm new to the SW side of things so bare with me here. Why have I not seen anyone with jellyfish? I can see why they couldnt play well with others, but why not by itself or with other jellyfish?

Re: jellyfish

I have cought a few jellyfish and thought it would be interesting to stick them in my tank...
They did not last long... a few were eaten quite quickly...and the remaining were sucked into the weir...

they are mainly tidal animals i think, so they will naturaly end up in the weir... i think their feeding habbits are quite specific and would be hard to mimic in a tank.. not too sure though...

apart from that, alot of them can give you a nasty sting.. some even enough to kill you within a few minutes...

Re: jellyfish

There are tanks espically for Jellyfish. I was just lloking it up. But the tank alone is 5000 and up. The jellyfish are around 40 dollars. I have seen them on TV and they are sooo pretty, but a little more then I can spend.

Re: jellyfish

They're fragile critters, they tend to be short-lived in the wild, prefer to be in a species specific tank, and if a seller makes a mistake on what type of jellyfish it is, the mistake could end up hospitalizing someone. One of the ones that would probably be easiest to keep in a tank, the tiny box jellyfish, also can kill with something like 5cm of sting (jellyfish stings are measured by the total length of tentacle contact on the skin). The Man O' War, which was long considered the most deadly jellyfish, needs dozens of feet of sting to kill. It is considered so deadly merely because it has such long, and so many, tentacles.
I suppose these all add up to make jellyfish rare in saltwater tanks.

Re: jellyfish

I have been to a few large public aquariums with Jellyfish tanks. They are very strange creatures and I have always wanted a Jelly tank. The most common tank I have seen Jellys in is a circular tank with a current going around in a circle so the jellys countinually go around and around. They are really cool but look very hard to deal with lol. If you have never seen a Jelly upclose you should. They are very uh... foreign... to anything else on this earth.
maybe?
