Saltwater Fish Food - Topics related to the feeding of saltwater fish and invertebrates. It seems like new foods are being introduced all the time for the saltwater aquarium hobby. Pellets, frozen food, freeze dried, flake food and home-made fish foods are very popular. Feeding newly introduced saltwater fish species can sometimes be very difficult. Use this board to discuss your marine fish food issues or tips.

Switching from live food to frozen

Anyone have any tips. I would like to get my Lionfish on frozen food. She is currently only
eating live grass shrimp. Anyone help would be appreciated.

fast for a day and watch what she eats after a day of fasting

usually they will just eat anything but if not, the fasting works great

What kind of lion? There are one that will eat Fz readily but ther are some types which might take little longer to learn (Slow Conditioning; no different from people) to accept prepared foods.
Should not feed lions exclusively on feeder either. Once you are more experienced, may not have to feed on daily basis but like I said that will come with experiences.
Any pics? Other tanks mates?

I moved my lion to frozen this way:

1) Fed for a few days after purchase with live glass shrimp.
2) After about 3 days (forget exactly) started feeding dead glass shrimp impaled on a skewer so I could wiggle it around to make it look alive.
3) After a couple more days of that, remove the skewer and put the dead shrimp in the water with no movement other than current.
4) Once the lion has gotten to this point, you are home free...just change from using glass shrimp to the frozen food of your choice. I used silversides and krill primarily.

Thats one way but found Fumanchu or other types little more difficult sometimes. Eventually they all ate Fz food as sgould mentioned and also i found that shrimp/small fish, when on sale from supermarket, was lot cheaper than one that has BRAND Name on it. It's more troublesome since i steamed/cut/chopped, etc but worth the trouble when keeping many carnivorous fish.
Just one carnivorous fish, may not be worth the trouble.

Lions, they tend to overeat thus use your judgement when to skip day or two in case the lion stuffed itself.
Dont let it go starving either. Use your judgement and feed live if and when needed.
It should, soon or later, learn from its tankmates when the meal is served.

Hope I catch some lions this summer! As You probably know, be Careful!

This is an important point. Lions will definately overeat, to the point of illness and early death. When I was researching my lion, I found a recommendation to feed no more than 3-4 times per week. I followed this schedule and my lion was healthy and showed normal growth. Right up until it went carpet diving while everyone was asleep, but that is another story.

Really!! Thats a shame!!
Out of so many fish which performed carpet diving (they always find those small openings which i assumed impossible), never an Lions. How long you had and how big was it?

Still baby, sorry to hear. I had few close call with few different types of lions but no sting yet. Mine stuck their head out to grab a food which i somewhat taught like I have done with certain cichllids (oscars, etc). i did few crazy things with lions like trying to give them a scratch under the chin since Some of big one were over a foot and not as fast as mid size ones.
Try FuManchu, Dendrochirus biocellatus, or FrogFish. You will enjoy them as well.

Thanks for so much for all the responses. I have a volitan. Still a baby, just about 5-6 inches. I've been feeding a few grass shrimp several times a day about 4 times a week. I fasted about 5 days and threw a couple krill in her tank which she quickly gobbled up but when she realized it wasn't her regular food, the rest sank to the bottom uneaten. I'll try again tommorrow and throw a couple more to she how she responds. Thanks again!
