feeding question

I am curious about the ability of sw species to fast for a few days. I know freshwater fish are typically able to weather several days without food just fine, if for example one were to be away from home for a short time. Are sw fish typically as hardy with respect to feeding? At the moment, my only sw fish is a percula clown, but will be adding other species later.

Re: feeding question

Feeding your fish a little bit of food once or more per day is closer to the way they eat in the wild, than feeding them a bunch of food every 2 or 3 days. What are you feeding your clown ?

Re: feeding question

Yes i agree little but often it is more natural, clown fish feeds mainly on zooplankton, such as copepods and larval tunicates. Possibly, it consumes algae from the surrounding coral reef or even leftover food portions from its host anemone.

Re: feeding question

I have samples of marine flakes and Red Sea MarineGro (small-medium sized granules) that I have been alternating in small amounts per feeding, 2 times per day. The clown seems to take better to the flakes, so I am planning on picking up a container after work today. I thought I would also pick up some brine shrimp as well. What I am concerned about, however, is that I do have an out of town trip coming up. I will be gone for 3 days.

Re: feeding question

Try to look into something like this.
Eheim 3581 "Feed-Air" Digital Automatic Feeder
I've heard good things about the Eheim feeders, though I've never used one. Also can you get a friend or family member to drop by and feed your fish while your away ?

Re: feeding question

I will probably go with a feeder. There is a neighbor coming over to care for the cat while we are away, but I am afraid the tank(s) would be overfed. Heard too many horror stories.

Re: feeding question

fwiw - I've gone out of town for a week at a time without feeding and the fish are fine. I get more worried about the neighbor emptying the protein skimmer collection cup - that's all I ask them to do as far as the fish go.
