You can do daily water changes, you can keep a spare filter running in the main tank and use it in the Q tank when needed.
If you are going to cycle the Q tank, you will need to feed it some form of ammonia to keep the bacteria alive.
If using the Q tank to treat sick fish do not use LR or a cycled filter as the meds used could kill the bacteria.
Do not use any equipment that has been used in the hospital tank on the main tank, as you could spread the sickness to the main tank.
Hope it helps. |
Set Q/T using water from main tank along w/ aged filter (sponge filter, etc) and heater while new arrivals are acclimating to main tank water, probably wont go thru mini cycle, but depends on amount of fish and food. Can even grab some gravel from the main tank which will definitely help. Still should monitor the water in Q/T closely and perform pwc as needed. You could repeat this procedure as new fish are brought home. It will be like doing small waer changes on main tank provided that there are big differences in volume (like 55g main and 10 G Q/T).
When ready to move them to main tank, drain most of the water from Q/T (4/5, make sure to unplug the heater) then use air line tubing w/ knot on one end (to control flow) to draw water from main to Q/T to
acclimate the Q/Td fish to main tank water (Even started off using main tank water, water chemistry would have changed thus still acclimate). When transfer is done, top off main tank with new water (Another PWC on main tank).
As far as sterilizing any equipments, use boiling method w/o any chemical then keep them dry until needed.
