Just lost all our fish

Dont know what has happened, yesterday we lost our tang, and today when I got home all the fish are dead.
The shrimp, snails and corals are fine, but all the fish are gone.
Water tests:
ammonia-0
nitrites-0
nitrates-10 ( did a water change last night )
PH-8.1
SG-1.024
Temp-25
We have been using NSW that is filtered to 5um.
I dont know what has happened, if anyone can think of what may have happened, please post..

I am sooooooooo sorry! That had to be devistating....I had that happen once a few years back....We had a power outage while I was at work and the tank overheated...Crashed the whole tank....

I hope you get some answers...It's frustrating not knowing.....

Thanks Martinismommy,
I will be getting a 10-20g tank on the weekend to put the corals in, and strip down the tank..
I have a mate that works in a lab that will test the water for me, just to see if something is in the water.. He wants to test the food that we have been feeding..
He is a good mate and if its something to do with the water or food he will find it..

That's awful. Strange that the fish died before the sensitive inverts, though. Let us know if you figure it out.

Hi agsansoo,
No ammonia spike. We have a spare filter cycling in the shed, when we got the new fish, the ceramics/bio media in the main tank was replaced with the media from the spare filter.
The spare filter was fully cycled and ammonia was added daily to 5ppm

Sorry to hear that... some other things to consider:
-stray voltage from a pump/powerhead/filter/lighting
-maybe the fish were collected with cyanide

Thanks Mike, got a sparky coming over tonight to test the equipment.
Had the water tested.
Ammonia 0.01
Nitrite 0.02
Nitrate 9.65
SG 1.023
No signs of poisons or hydrocarbons
The thing is that all the fish died within about 24hrs.. but the shrimps, snails are fine.
The corals just look fantastic..

How long had you had the fish? Mike's got a point. If they had been harvested with cyanide, this would not necessarily have shown in the water (particularly since cyanide, I think, has a habit of dissipating after a bit), but could have killed them off like that. Not likely, but when you've got a strange scenario like this, everything has to be considered.

Tang, copper band about 3 weeks, and the rest between 1-5 months.
No stray voltage, was hoping there was as this would have been easy to fix.
I have read that some fish release a poison when they die, does a powder blue tang?
I am starting to think that something got into the tank with one of the water changes.
I will be stripping down the tank over the weekend, set up a spare tank for the corals and run a UV for a while.. leave it fishless for 4 weeks, then start again.

That's really odd. If it was cyanide, I would presume they would have to be from the same batch and purchased recently.

Not sure about the tang releasing poison.
You don't have a sea slug or sea cucumber in the tank, do you? They can respond to stress by releasing poison (though in the case of the cucumber, you'd probably notice its entrails strewn about the bottom of the tank, as that's part of the defense mechanism)

No sea slugs or sea cucumbers in the tank.
What ever it is, it only affected the fish, that is what is making me think that a pathogen, or something like that has entered the system.
A few years ago we had a massive die off of our pilchards on the west coast, this was due to a virus that came from the ballast water from ships... I just dont know..

I suppose a virus would make sense. Most toxins would affect the inverts first.
The only other thing I could think of would be a massive temp drop and subsequent rise. Inverts can recover from these better than fish (there are frozen lobsters that have pinched people once they were thawed, but prior to boiling. All lobsters now have bands on their claws to avoid this). Still, virus seems like a more likely possibility.

Hope everything goes well with the breakdown/restart.
