ok...this just might be my first bout with a fish disease...i noticed a very small white speck on my coral beauty...the first thing to come to mind is ich...are there any good photos of ich somewhere so that i can compare them to what i see. how long is too long before i treat it? any help would be great!
sometimes the saltwater fish just get some song or rock on them that looks like ich but keep your eyes peeled. sorry i dont have better info but i do know that marine ich is much harder to get rid of.
it looks like it was a piece of white sand that was on the fish. i noticed it and within a few hours it was gone. i just hope that it wasn't in the advanced stage...but i know i would have noticed if it was.
I think if it was in advanced stage you would see more than one spot. From my experience I've been able to see spots on their fins relatively easily. I think your safe especially if the attitude hasn't changed and is eating fine. Maybe have some garlic elixir on hand to soak your foods once a week or two weeks to help stimulate the immune system.
you should be able to get a garlic soak at your LFS. According to mine, they say parasites don't like the garlic in the fishes system and thus will escape. However, garlic can be harmful to the liver and maybe other vital organs to the fish.. which is why you should only do it often and maybe on a bi-weekly basis. I use this GVH stuff which isn't as potent with garlic but contains other healthy ingredients to soak the food giving my fish a very healthy diet.
I also throw some natural bacteria by Marine Max. According to the LFS it helps prevent disease breakouts and provides a natural bacteria film which fish are suppose to have in the ocean. The guy is a good friend at the local fish store and used both the GVH soak and Marine Max to fight ich a number of times.
ok...its official...my coral beauty has ich. i am using an eclipse system 5 tank for my hospital tank...help me out guys...what on earth do i need to do?
Assuming no inverts in the QT. Raise the temp in the QT to 82 and medicate with rid-ich or similar treatment. Your LFS will have medication. Be sure there is no carbon filtration going on in the QT as it will remove the medication as soon as you put it in.
ok...i have the bio wheel going...can i still run that...i will remove the carbon filter that it comes with though...should i put something in its place?
OK to run the filter without the carbon...no need to add anything in its place. Keep an eye on your parameters though so you don't run into ammonia problems.
