Ich can definitely kill your fish and all fish, especially saltwater species should be quarantined before placing them into the main tank. There are lots of fish meds at the store for treating ich. I've used rid-ich+ and it works well. I dose everyday with 20% water changes daily while the fish are in qt. Once they show signs of ich I'll leave them in qt for a further 4 weeks or so while treating them.

You have to turn off the protein skimmer when using medications otherwise it just gets skimmed out of the water. I'd try to get them into a Quarantine Tank asap and treat them in qt if you have a setup with live rock or inverts in your main tank. The meds could harm the rock and inverts.

Hope that helps,
Mike

Yeah, ich can kill, and it's all the more of a shame considering how easy it is to treat. Nowadays, noone should have to loose their fish to ich with all the really effective meds available.

Sorry to hear that your fish got ich - that's definitely not a pleasant experience! From being around this forum I've learned that ich doesn't like warm water, so it's helpful to raise the temperature a couple of degrees as well. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help!

Well, you know, these things happen. What counts is that you didn't do it out of neglect, but you were just distracted. It's not like you knew you had to do it but could not be bothered. Honestly? I reckon fish are lucky to have owners like you or me who sometimes forget stuff, as opposed to ones who consciously neglect them.

Is your fish OK? I can't give any saltwater advice, but I'd start a new thread asking for advice on ich if you still havne't got the answers you need to cure them.

The problem with treating ich in a 240 gallon tank would be the cost of the meds! One 4oz bottle of rid-ich (malachite green + formalin) would be required to treat a 240 gallon tank. And you may have to do this daily for a while until the ich stops coming back, along with daily partial water changes. The other drawbacks are that it can stain the silicone blue and harm your inverts and live rock. So, I'd definitely try to get any infected fish into a smaller volume of water to more effectively treat them.
