About Fish Food

It's tempting to buy one of the larger tubs of fish food flakes. More cost effective, less going to the fish store, etc....

I've found, though, that no matter how careful you are the food in the container will get wet. Then you put it in the tank and it's all clumped up and sinks to the bottom. So the money you've saved by buying in bulk is actually wasted in the long run.

I buy the smaller sized containers - such as prime reef flakes - and usually by the end it's starting to get damp enough to start a problem. Keeping the lid off will help somewhat, but I can't help but think that allows some of the flavor to escape.

I suppose you could buy in bulk and then break it down into smaller containers if you were so inclined.

Anyway, that's just me thinking out loud.

How is the food getting wet?

Is saltwater food packed differently than freshwater? I have fresh, and I purchase it in bulk, then dump all that into a large ziploc bag, then take a smaller amount in smaller ziploc, and that's what I use until I need to refill the smaller ziploc again. Keeps the food really fresh and certainly never damp or wet.

I buy my food in bulk then fill a small container and put the rest in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer to keep it fresh.

Yeah, I haven't had this problem yet. If anyhting I've been concerned about opening the container too frequently. I live in an arid climate, and water Evaporates at about a rate of 1/2 inch per day in each of my tanks. I've worried my container of food will be like the most stale bag of potatoe chips in the entire world by the end.
