Where To Start?

I have received as a gift a 55 gallon tank and I would like to set it up as a marine tank. I know that this will be costly, and will take time but, I will try to be patient. Because of my fish budget I can only buy equipment and supplies as budget permits. What should I spend my first few hundred on??

First I would do the equipment. The protein skimmer, A power filter, the heater, the salt, and a refractometer not a hydrometer.
