AquaClear 110/500 vs Fluval 405

I am currently running an aquatech 30-60 power filter on my 75 gallon reef tank. It works okay, however I plan on upgrading soon. Originaly I was going to purchase a Fluval 405 canister filter for my tank. However i have been reading a lot about the auquaclear line of HOB power filters. The model I think I would need is the AquaClear 110/500 filter. Would this filter be enough to keep the water in my 75 gallon tank clean and clear and safe more my corals and fish? Or should I go with the much larger fluval 405 canister filter. Take note! I am not cheap, so dishing out the 200$ for the fluval will not be a problem, however if I can get an aqua clear that would filter my tank for under 100$, that would be great! What do you guys think?

I think you should go with a canister in a tank that large. You're going to want the efficient filtration a canister can provide.

I have a Fluval 305 on my 30 gallon, and am very satisfied with it.

Is this a 75gal reef tank? Do you have a sump? A refugium? The live rock will perform your biological filtration for you so the filter has other purposes. The canister filter can be used to run carbon or the AC can have the filter box converted into a refugium. Just my 2cents.

Howdy neighbor! Canister filters are ok for reef tanks I suggest not using it for biological use only for carbon or phophate removers etc. and filter media only. I would go with a sump they are a lot easier to deal with and you can put a skimmer in it etc. If you do go with a canister eheim makes a very well built one.

Oops, I didn't notice this was a saltwater question. Good thing that the advice to go with the canister was okay.

Personally I see no logic in using either in a reef setting. If you plan to upgrade consider going the sump/fuge way.

I have a Nano Reef. Early January 2010 I took my protein skimmer out (for maintenance) and replaced it with a DIY Algae Turf (nitrate & phosphate Remover, idea of SantaMonica) I was experimenting with. I'm still running without the protein skimmer (no need to).

Healthy Live rock and Deep Sand Bed are, in my honest opinion, the best filtration a reef tank can have.
