how do i convert freshwater tank to reef tank?

hey guys i have one small pico style tank for my betta fish. i wanna convert that to saltwater/reef tank. what do i need to do? do i need to change filter completely? or can i just clean filter and change the filter media? how should i wash the tank? do i need to use special cleaning agent to clean the tank or just warm water is fine? how do i clean the filter? any advise would be very helpful..

if you have never kept a saltwater tank i would suggest not trying to start with a picotope.. I'm not saying it cannot be done but it is a task to keep up with any reef much less one that is able to go awry in hours.. if you want to know the equipment you would need a better light i am sure, with the right spectrums... a powerhead to move the water.. a heater which you may have... also you will probably need a new substrate and liverock... also with these questions i think you haven't researched reefs or nano/pico reefs nearly enough...

This, if you try it out, will probably be more of a big headache than an enjoyable venture... I would suggest a bigger tank and if you can't afford it you have no real business in trying to keep a reef...

also this probably should have been placed in the saltwater beginners section...

hey thanks for the advise. but i do have kept saltwater before.. infact i just posted my new 4 month old saltwater gallery --> http://gallery.me.com/pneupane#10004...r=black&sel=21

anyways besides that i was really looking for help on what needs to be done when converting saltwater to freshwater or vice versa.. how to clean up tank, do i need to change / clean filter. with what kinda cleaning agent ..etc etc. this is not necessarily saltwater beginner question as i am sure same rule will apply to when converting saltwater tank to freshwater.
