Having kept an Oceanic Biocube in the past, I can tell you that an all-in-one setup makes it pretty easy to start a SW tank. Have you done much research about SW? There are a lot of things about keeping a reef tank that are very different from keeping
FW. Here are a few suggestions that come to mind immediately:
First of all, your
nanocube will come with bioballs in the back chamber. I'd suggest removing them and filling that chamber with
live rock rubble instead. It is much more beneficial from a biological filtration standpoint. Second, I'd recommend purchasing a
refractometer to check your
specific gravity. You can do it with a
hydrometer, but they are much less accurate.... basically, you get what you pay for just like anything else. Third, you should probably replace the stock pump and possibly add another
powerhead for extra flow. This isn't necessary, but I began to have issues with cyanobacteria before I increased flow in my Biocube. The included pumps are barely adequate, IMO.
As for stocking, after your tank cycles and you can add your clean up crew, wait until your params are stable and you can start stocking VERY slowly. It takes marine tanks a lot longer to mature than FW tanks IME. The lighting in a Nanocube (unless you go with the Nanocube HQI), is adequate for many soft corals and some
LPS (long polyped stony) corals. Examples would be zoanthids, mushrooms, xenia, clove polyps, frogspawn, candy cane, etc. When it comes to fish, what are you interested in? You could keep percula, ocellaris, or skunk clownfish, royal gramma, firefish, small gobies, there are really quite a few options. Hope this helps and be sure to ask any other questions you might have.
