Blood Red Fire Shrimp

Hi All,

Does anybody know much about the Blood red Fire shrimp? I was wondering if I should consider this shrimp as part of a clean up crew..... Will it prey on pest such as the aiptasia or brittle worm? Perhaps good for algae clean up?

They can act as cleaners and will scavenge extra food around the tank, but I've never heard of them consuming aiptasia or bristle worms. Never heard of them eating algae either.

Except for really really large specimens, bristle worms are generally considered good for the tank as they eat excess food from the substrate.

I am wanting to add one to my tank, but they are one of the more pricey shrimp and I'm having trouble finding one in town. How big is your tank? I would practice keeping shrimp starting with a few peppermints, and if they live a few months, then add a fire shrimp. The peppermints will take care of aiptasia and you MAY see them during the day, though mine are mostly nocturnal.

Hope this helped, sorry it took so long for a response.

Hi, well from what I've read they are consider as cleaner shrimp. They tend to hide more than a scarlet shrimp and because of this if you want a more active shrimp I'd go with the skunk shrimp (scarlet shrimp). You can hand feeding them too and they have no problem being shy compared to the blood shrimp (fire shrimp). Both are gorgeous, compatible and a great addition.

I have one and love the guy. While he maybe classified as a cleaner type of shrimp, I apparently have a lazy one. He doesn't clean anything. And they don't eat algae. They don't go after aiptasia. But they very cool looking!!
