Nano Reef Tanks

so ive been raising FW fish for three years now and ive been wanting to move into SW for some time... i recently saw these Nano Reef cubes and all sorts of supposedly fully built sw ready systems. so my question was if anyone had experience and if they would suit me well. thank you all very much.

This is probably the beat nano tank kit ever. It is a pretty good size, come with the highest lighting that an aquarist can get(great for corals), and it looks good. I don't have it, but i've heard its awesome. Heres the website: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...4&pcatid=18694

The kind of lighting that comes with the 28 gallon hqi is unnecessary if you aren't keeping clams or corals that require high light. It also has a bad reputation of overheating the tank pretty badly; so a chiller would probably be needed if you live in a hot climate or do not have an AC system.
I just ordered the little brother of that tank, the 24 gallon with power compact lighting and a free stand. I've heard many good things about it.
I'll make a thread about it when it arrives.

First decide what type of corals you'll want to keep and then go from there in terms of lighting.

Although the one that is linked does come with cooling fan, it's really simple to modify it so that it runs even cooler. Also, if run on a timer, you shouldn't have to worry too much about over heating. My MH bulbs (on all my tanks) only run from 4pm to 10pm. From 10am to 11pm I run just the actinics and then from 11pm to 10am I run the LED moonlights

You will be better starting off with a tank of a minimum of 30 gallons. Nano saltwater tanks are unforgiving when it comes to little slips in maintenance or any problem. With saltwater tanks, you are best starting off with the biggest you can afford.

Before you start buying anymore equipment or setting up a tank; you should start with reading one or both of these books before you even start thinking about buying equipment or setting up a tank: the new marine aquarium; Step-by-Step Setup and Stocking Guide, by Michael S. Paletta or The conscientious marine aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Saltwater Hobbyists, by Bob Fenner are about the best two books to buy on how to setup and maintain saltwater tanks. They will teach you a lot.
