Inherited salt water tank

hello

i have had fresh water aquariums for several years, but never made the jump to saltwater. my father decided to make the jump to salt water about 9 months ago and jumped in the deep end really quickly. he bought a 210 gallon setup with about 300 lbs of LR. after a while, due to health concerns he had to give it up and he gave it to me. i am trying to quickly learn as much as possible and get it ready to try to save as many fish as possible. i have recently moved it into my basement which is also my entertainment room. the pump and protein skimmer is so loud that i have the tv up as high as it can to hear it. i finally was able to get the lights setup and now it is so hot that my furnace doesn't need to run. did the aquarium place that he bought it from really over sell him as the systems seem to be extremely heavy duty, loud and hot. the shop also did not provide any manuals for the equipment, which is really driving me nuts. i am trying to figure out ways to eliminate some of the sound and the heat. any suggestions would be appreciated. i have the fish still at my fathers in a smaller tank but it was recommended that for the size of them i have about 2 weeks to get it settled for them, before they can start to have health concerns.

any help or suggestions would be appreciated. i also don't know if the live rock made the transfer well. it was in pretty sad shape by the time that i got to it.

thanks

Hi bundy and welcome to fishlore post up your equipment list so we have a idea what is noisey and if it is known to be noisey ,,, or if you can buy a new kit to silence , i know theres a few deltec skimmers that they changed the shaft s to make pretty much silent

Yes, welcome to Fishlore Bundy. The pumps and skimmer shouldn't be that loud. Check for things like stuff touching each other so as not to give a nice extra noise that shouldn't be there.

But yes agreed on giving us a list of stuff you have. And we love pics!!

hi all

sorry to take so long but i wanted to track down specs on the equipment

turboflotor 5000 compact skimmer
turbosea 1740p pump
mr trickle comp 36 x 15 filter
seio 820 pump/ powerhead
maxi jeet 1200 powerhead
sp mag drive 7 water pump
wavemaker pro 4
lighting system is a coral life pro 72"Click the image to open in full size.

this was all purchased from big al's in whitby, ontario, so i might go back there to get some answers, even though my dad was really ****ed at them.

i am hoping someone has a manual for the wavemaker 4 as i don't have a clue how to set this up with the programing options. aswell, i think i am going to take the power heads back to see if they will be covered under the electrical warranty although i really doubt it will work. some of the power heads are making a grinding noice when they start up, i am guessing maybe it is air stuck in them and if i re positioned them it might be better.

by tonight i will have posted pictures of the setup that i have got. good news is that i was really watching the live rock and i saw some critters moving around still. my levels are stable and i think the curing process has finished, but i don't see alot of activity. i purchase one fish (Domino Damselfish) and 2 other fish that i left the proper name at home today yesterday to test if the setup could sustain life. they seem to be doing great, but the tempeture is constant at a 83 degrees, which i am told is high from the books i am reading.

hopefully this will be a start for any help that you can give.

thanks

bundy

Yeah, that temp is a little high. Is there a heater on the system you can turn down? Does it have a hood?

What are your readings for:

ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
calcium
alkalinity
salinity/specific gravity
and if you have a test kit, Phosphates

As for the things making noise, there is probably build up on many of them. Go get about 2 gallons of white vinegar, a tub, 2-4 gallons of water, and mix them together. For the powerheads, set them in the mix for about an hour, then turn them on and let them run for an hour. You may need to take a brush (buy a new scrub brush, one never used on dishes) and brush the items in the mix. Most things should run pretty quiet in an aquarium. The loudest thing on my tank is the fan for the light and the water inlet in the sump.

Does the tank have an overflow/sump system? The easiest way to cool the tank would be to buy a couple computer fans (you're getting alot of the heat from the metal halides) and have them run across the tank..

Or, a more expensive, but in the long run, more effective way, is to look at purchasing a chiller.

Are you just talking about the heat from the equipment or is the water actually too hot? Like over 80F?

I mean you being that you're in Ontario, I would think it might be a tad cold there and heating would be more of an issue.

Here in calgary in my upstairs tank (120 gallons) with the MH being on only 6 hours a day during warm summer days I can still reach up to 83* (chiller now installed maintains it at a constant 79*)....in the basements w/o chillers but with MH bulbs my tanks seem to stay between 76* and 80*
