This may seem like a dumb ? but can someone please explain the difference between coral safe and reef safe?

They basically mean the same thing. A SW tank with corals in it is referred to as a reef tank. A fish or invert that is safe with corals (won't eat them) is considered to be reef safe.

ok....that is what i thought but i have seen a site where it has both as a category ie it will say reef safe: yes/no and then it will also say coral safe yes/no. so i just wanted to make sure there wasnt a difference. thanks for the info!

reef safe means they wont eat corals or inverts and coral safe is just corals may eat inverts if not reef safe
