Matching Skimmer Pump to Return pump flow. HELP PLEASE!

Hey everyone,

Okay...so here's whats going on. I need to replace my protein skimmer pump. I am confused in that I don't know if my skimmer pump should match the GPH as my return pump...or what. So if you could give me an idea if they should be near the same flow rate or what the flow rate should be for my skimmer pump it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 125G tank with a 20G refugium. The skimmer I am using is a AquaMedic Turbo Flotor SL. My return pump is a Danner Mag Drive 18 at about 3.5' which the flow rate is aprox 1300gph. Any questions please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

If your current setup is working, i.e., good foam in the skimmer, and the skimmer isn't over-flowing, and your return, (sump tank) isn't over-flowing or very low then i would use a pump of the same gph that you have now. If i am not mistaken some aquamedic's come with the pump as part of the set-up, if this is the case i would replace with the same model/type as the current pump. Otherwise, if the set-up you are using now works - i would keep everything the same - as of course when you change one thing in the pathway of the water flow, that usually means changes occur somewhere else along the pathway of the water return.
