Question about canister filter

Would a Eheim 2217 canister filter will be good to use in a saltwater tank?
it was previously used in a fresh water can I use it right away in a saltwater tank or do I have to clean the filter media?

thanks!!!

According to www.aquariumguys.com/eheimcanister4.html it is fine for saltwater.

I feel the question about the media is more do you want to chance introducing something to your saltwater tank.

IN THE VERY LEAST, I would wash the media....VERY WELL in clear water. Use a conditioner, and then biospira for saltwater to re establish the bacteria.

Good Luck

Canister filters are more of a freshwater filter. Not necessary for saltwater. You should eventually move to a protein skimmer, if you don't already have one and lots of live rock. Canister filters should be cleaned out weekly or they will produce excess nitrates over time.

I agree with agsansoo. It may seem strange to basiclly not run a typical mechanical filter on the tank, but wetween the LR and the Protein Skimmer your tank will do great. You will also be amased how much cleaner the water looks after you change.

so would it do more harm the filter to the tank more than it would help it?

Filters left unattended will cause high amount of nitrates. As long as you clean them often they are not a problem
