New to saltwater

hello, im new to saltwater and i just got my filter and tank set up with live rock and i had a question about bio spira since i just added it to my tank and i was wondering if it was ok to leave the lights on just like about 5-7hrs a day not the entire day cause i know that might cause an algea outbreak and since its a metal halide i saw that it gets kinda hot i wasnt able to find alot information concerning this so any info would be greatly appriciated. thanks!!!

Welcome to the wonderfull world that is SW tanks. First thing I need to know is what kind of light it is? Is it just a metal halide pendant or a fixture with power compact lights as well? I would recomend leaving your lights on for 8-10 hours a day for your live rock. Yes i would recommend keeping an I on your water temp because the halide lights generate some heat and con raise the water temp, and you are going to want to keep the temperature around 77-80F. Hope this helps

with the bio-spira, are you adding any ammonia sources? as in either pure ammonia or live fish? that's more important than just lights.

i used bs for the first time last weekend and i added it with 4 chromis and 1 royal gramma. i fed and left the lights on for 10-12 hours a day and it seems like the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are settling down now.
