Hello! I've used the deep six in the past. After you mix up your saltwater and aerate it for several hours to let all the mix dissolve, dip that hydrometer into the mixing bucket to test the specific gravity. As the water flows into the hydrometer the plastic arm swings into the sg range of the sample you are testing. You may need to tap it with your finger to make sure any bubbles aren't on the arm which could give an inaccurate reading. For saltwater aquariums you want the reading to be in the indicated safe range on the hydrometer, which is usually around 1.020 - 1.024.

Also note that Hydrometers are not considered as accurate as refractometers.

I also found that I'd have to fill it, empty it about 5 times before getting an accurate reading. But ya...get a refractometer when you can afford it. They're faster to use and far more accurate. Dr. Foster and Smith has one around $40 or so.

Oil Fan is right. You have to fill and empty it a few times with your tank water to get an accurate reading. Also before you use it, don't forget to season the needle. Just fill it with your tank water and let it sit for 24 hours or so. When taking a reading, always tap on it with your finger to get out the air bubbles!
