converting from freshwater to saltwater

Hi everyone we are new to the site but love what we see.

We are converting from a freshwater to a saltwater tank. We have a 90 gallon tank and have a canister style filter and we were told by a few people to pull the carbon bags out and we were wondering if this is correct. We also have 2 power heads the spoll filter that came with the tank and a protien skimmer 100 pounds of sand and so far 50 pounds of live rock. We will be adding about 50 more pounds of live rock. We used ro water and instant ocean salt is there anything else we need to add to get our tank going?

You've got the bases covered. Carbon is up to you. Some use it, some don't. If you decide to use it, just be sure that you change it regularly (at least once per month). Once it is spent, it starts releasing all the bad stuff it has absorbed back into the tank. Are you planning on keeping corals too, or just fish for now?

Ya...Carbon isn't needed. I only use it occasionally to clear up the water.

And that's a good amount of LR, so you're good there. As for what else you'll need, you should pick up the API saltwater testing kit and a hydrometer to measure the salinity. That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I would scrap the canister filter all together, will the live rock, live sand, good water flow and regular waterchanges, you wont really need to use the canister filter. Are you going to be using a sump?
