New Tank for a beginner

I have recently setup a new 125 gallon fish only with 80lbs of live rock tank.
It is something that I have always wanted to try. That having been said, i am in the process of going through the cycling stage. I am going to be as patient as necessary. I wanted to get some opinions on the following. I stumbled on a website for Neptune systems. Is anyone out there failiar with it and if so do you think it is a worthwile investment. I know with maintaining my pool, the job of testing the water chemistry is sometimes confusing. From what i can tell it seems like this takes the guess work out. However the only probes that I see offered are for pH and ORP. I dont see anything for Nitrates and Nitrites. Or am i missing the point and ORP makes up the whole nitrate and nitrite concept.
Next I was also planning on setting up a reverse osmosis system with an automatic filler. Any thoughts on this as well.
Am i just spending unnecessary money on gadgets
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Dave

Hi Dave, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

I hope some saltwater folks jump on here soon. I can't answer your question, but know others will, I just wanted to bump this back up to the top, so more people would see it.

I could however recommend the API Master test kit (LIQUID for Marine tanks)...This would give you testing for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph.

We always love meeting new people, and I hope you feel free to post all over the forum...jump in the waters fine!

Orp = oxygen reduction potential.

This is a very complex subject. ORP in a reef aquarium is a struggle or war going on in your tank. ORP is a measure of who is winning and who is losing this war. The two sides are oxidizers ( ozone, hydrogen peroxide, nitrate and many more ) and reducers ( ammonia, iodide, and sulfide ). If either side wins the war, your tank and all in it will die. Like most things in life, it's all about balance !

( Hope I didn't confuse you more than needed )

So I recommend just getting some good test kits for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, calcium, Alk, PH, Phos and Mag. to start with, and worry about ORP probes and meters later on !
