| | Fish Bum | Beware Of Petco (ick) I just purchased a tang wensday from my local petco from wensdays shipment....by the time i woke up ick has killed almost all of my livestock....i returned to petco tonight and all of there saltwater tanks had ick ( and they werent doing anything about it GRRRRRRR..) I then went to the other local petco and they aswell had an ick outbreak.....after talking to customer service headquaters,,,,,they told me that most of the shipments to ALL petcos had some contaminations.....that came from the fish farm in flordia.. I am so mad at Petco that they would just let all of there fish die off.... they moto is suppost to be "pets come first"....yea right plz let me know if u have had any of the same problems Last edited by Lucy; February 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 PM.

| | Fish Master | That's why it's usually recommended to quarantine new SW fish for 4 weeks. They're pretty fragile and get disease easily.
I wish the stores would take some responsibility though. |

| | Fish Keeper | Why did you not quarantine, or at least wait, for a fish that is a known ICH magnet? You bought a fish just off the shipment that is probably under a lot of stress. Tangs get ich, it's what happens, same way damsels are mean, firefish jump, it's just something that goes along with the hobby.
FWIW, a 29 gallon is not big enough for a Tang, and possibly added to its stress. Make sure you properly research fish before buying them. Most wild caught fish can carry all kinds of bacteria and "stuff" that you don't want to introduce, so consider a freshwater dip for new fish with methylene blue to help get rid of some of the bad critters.
I've bought a few fish for my SW tank from Petco (Clowns and Neon Goby), and almost all of my freshwater fish from there and have very good luck with them. |

| | Fish Keeper | Well you posted complaining about a Tang from Petco with ich, so I assumed you had not done any research. I still wouldn't put a Tang in a 45, maybe a 75.
Is this your first time in that store? As I said, I've purchased plenty of fish from my Petco and am on good terms with the fish manager, who has several tanks himself at home. I have seen him turn people away who were trying to buy fish that were not appropriate, so I know he cares about more than a sale.
Most shipments to all stores always have contamination. You put hundreds of fish in bags with no/low oxygen exchange, high stress, and then move them from environment to environment without giving them time to settle...no offense, but it seems like you have no one to blame but yourself. You saw sick fish in the tanks and still bought, then you knew you were taking the risk.
I'm not sure why you made the post if it wasn't for advice, you were just ranting? |

| | Fish Addict | I tend to just avoid petco. Haven't been in there since I saw the 6 tomato clowns eating eachother alive in a 10 gallon display tank with a deflated and bleached BTA under normal output lighting. |

| | Fish Keeper | It does not matter where you purchase the fish. It could happen with any fish purchased at different LFS. Becareful when purchasing just arrived fish. New arrival need to seetled in lfs tank before you purchase, Going from one to another to another in one day may be too much for fish.
If possible, could purchase the new arrivals right out of the box if you can thus need to accimate to your tank only, of course, you should Q/T any new arrivals. When you do purchase right out of box, test the pH of the water in the shipping bag and should match
the pH of q/t to bag water at first. Most of times, S/W fish are shipped at lower pH to ensure their survival ( ammonia they produced in bag is not as toxic in pH of 7.6 or lower). Once the bag water has been diluted with your tank water and removed during acclimation pan, then you can slowly raise the pH of your tank water and start acclimate to this new tank water and so on until proper pH is reached. This is the method of acclimating the fish out box after long shipping. I personally prefer to purchase fish out of box before it hit the lfs tank thus I can take care of fish better in my Q/T than lfs. One important thing to remember is to perform this accllimation in darkness, even when transporting fish out of box( Ice Box).
Either way, you should always Q/T. Less loss and less frustrations!!
BTW, dont know of S/W fish farm in Florida! And what kind of fish purchased? |

And what kind of fish purchased? | i'm with cerianthus, all fish should be quarantined (unless they are the first fish to be introduced into a tank or are going to be the only fish in the tank) and there's no guarantee that even the best LFS will have healthy fish the day that they all get shipped. almost every LFS i've been to doesn't give a guarantee on SW fish, so even just for that reason I would take more care in selecting, buying, and quarantining any SW fish. |

| | Fish Keeper | Dont feel bad. We all have been there one time or another. As long as we learn from it, more fish will benefit down the road.
It is unfortunate that so many livestock perishes due to improper care/no care at lfs and some keepers too( I dont mean you at all), especially when taken from nature for our enjoyments! |

| | Moderator | A short story...Once I went to WalMart's fish department and all the tanks were over stocked BIG TIME...so many dead fish in each tank it wasn't funny. I came home and sent an email to WalMart headquarters and explained the situation...where I lived and the WalMart store #. Within one week.....the tanks were restocked, cleaned and another employee was in control of the fish department. hmmmmmm I felt much better.
About 2 weeks ago I went to Petco for a new 29 gal tank I use to prefilter water for my 155g tank. I was given a coupon at check out with a toll free # to call and take a survey on how well my visit was to Petco. (Sorry I don't have it now I used it) The survey took about 10 minutes. The store # and toll free # was on the receipt. Sounds like you have a reason to call and take that survey. There is no excuse for ICK in every tank going untreated. Just a thought |
