New Sailfin Tang

We are regulars to our LFS since the start of our tank....
they are a very reputible place and come highly recommended.....
we trust them and find them to be very knowledgable and honest....
they have steered us away from making mistakes with choosing agressive fish and what would not work in our tank and why....never trying to sell us a specific fish or breed....just showing us our options and letting us decide from there

when we got the sailfin tang yesterday I had not done any previous research on what we would get next

to be honest,I feel very comfortable reminding him of what is in the tank ...and asking what is a logical next step?

We got a pacific sailfin tang which we absoluetly love....she seems to be a great addition to the tank and is getting along "swimmingly" with her tank mates....

my only question is we have a 29 gal tank and everywhere I read says not to keep them in anything smaller than a 75. I honesyly dont think this place is trying to do us wrong

This concerns me....
what does this mean for the Tangs future....
Please dont call the Tang police on us...lolol...we have been determined and patient since day one to make our tank a safe and happy home for all that live in it....

thanks

It's great that you are concerned and looking out for the little guy! Sailfins do need a much larger tank, as much as 125 gallons, in part because they are such active swimmers and in part because they grow quite large...potentially over a foot long. At that size, such a small tank would barely allow it to move. Your LFS may well be a great store with generally knowledgeable and reliable people, but honestly, someone there gave you bad advice on this one. The best move for the fish would be to either return it and get something better suited to your size tank, or to invest in a larger tank.

I went to another LFS today...and spoke to them for another opinion

the guy I spoke with said Based on the info I gave him a small one could be in there right now but it would outgrow the tank at some point.....he didnt give me a timeline on their growth though

it is definitly a jouvanile at this point and is pretty small
so at least I dont feel like it is critical I get her out right now....and can look into options

if we were to go with a larger tank which im sure we will at some point in time it will have to be a tall tank which I kinda didnt want to go with.....
we only have a 3 ft wide space for a tank so it was the 29 gal that won

ive been thinking of every possible place to put another tank....

no tangs should really be put in a tank under 5 ft due to the swim room required,, and a sailfin is one of the larger tangs so you would need at least a 6 ft minimum for him ,, they do also grow quickly, keeping in a smaller tank can shorten life expectancy and also will cause stress which in turn with tangs causes white spot ,,
