How many fish?

I have a good amount of fish in my, 65 gallon tank now, but I was wondering how many fish I could have maximum. I know that the freshwater rule of 1 inch of fish per gallon does not apply. Can anyone tell me around how many fish I can have. Thanks in advance!

Hi becca..I dont know about sw tanks, but im sure many will ask what do you have at the moment in your 65 gallon? then maybe they will know where you can go from there

I have 1 blue hippo tang, 1 flame angle, 2 green chromis, 2 percula clownfish, 1 dragonet, 1 sand-sifting starfish, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 sally litefoot crab, 3 hermit crabs, and 6 snails. I know it sounds like a lot, but the tank seems really empty.

2 things first, and please don't take this the wrong way, but your tank is too small for the hippo tank and for the dragonet. You should have at least a 75gal but better still a 100gal minimum for the tang, as well as the dragonet. The tang will get pretty large in size and need a lot of room to move. If they don't they start to get stressed and can become sick very easily, and will be very hard to cure and even if you do the chances that the problem will return will be high. As for the dragonet, they eat the copopds and anthropods off of the live rock, and need a very abundant source of live rock to live off of. The tank also needs to be established and running for a good 1.5-2.0 years to ecumulate enough food to even start to staisfy a dragonet. Almost none will eat any prepared foods. The hard part about the dragonets is they can live for 6-8 months and look fine and then 1 day will jsut be dead. This is beacuse they slowly straved to death. I recomend 1st is to find a new good home for these 2 fish and then you will have pleanty of room to add more fish to your tank.

yeah i agree with Tumbleweed on the two fish that need to go... i've also heard that the tangs need something around 5+ feet of room to just go.. so a 65 isnt going to cut it for that guy... and the dragonet will just eat all the food in there and then he is done for... all the crabs and snails and starfish etc usually don't add to the bioload of the tank as far as i understand... so basically we need to get the tang and dragonet out of there and the other fish are ok...
its hard to just give a this many inches of fish for this size tank kind of rule... you kind of have to know about the fish you want and then see if they will go with the current inhabitants of your tank...
so basically what im seeing is you can't add anymore angle fish, anymore clowns or damsels...
other than that i'd just do research on any that you want to add... and after getting those other two fish out of your tank your options will be very open!
any ideas on fish you'd like to add?
