6.6 gallon

Hi,

I bought a 6.6 bookshelf acrylic aquarium awhile back ago and wanted to keep bettas or multis in there but instead I might change into saltwater. What kind of inhabitants will be suitable for a 6.6 long tank? A single goby? I plan on just having FOWLR until I can be more experienced.

Thanks in advanced!

A single goby would probably be alright. Here is a link to recommended species for nano tanks. Most are recommended for 10 gallons, but I think you'd be ok with what you have. I personally would be inclined to go with a Catalina or a red banded...they're pretty small, which matches well with your tank size, but are very colorful.

Hi Sean,

I don't see a link , do you think live rock is compatible in such a small space?
Also when I do w/cs can I just add tap water to the tank or does it need to be R/O water?

OOOPS!

LOL...here you go...sorry!

Yes, live rock would be a benefit even in such a small tank. As for water changes, I would suggest RO water for both water changes and top offs.

Is that the one that is 24"x8"x9"? If so you should be able to keep two clowns (Ocellaris) and a couple of shrimp (skunk or fire) and maybe and maybe a goby (yellow, green, green banded or catalina).

Well it depends on your tap water, but usually I recomend RO to make it easier and alomost worry free.

Don't they need at least a 30 gallon minimum?

I have seen different web sites that say 10 gallon minimum and others say 30 galloon minimum. My experience with these fish is that as long as they have a nice footprint (yours being 8x24) they will be ok. They are not what I would call a "swimmer" fish. If you feel unocnfortable with them in the tank, than go with smaller fish like the Goby.

If you do go with clowns, just make sure they paired up. Oscellaris are more peacefull ad easier to get along. After you put them in keep watching them for adnormal swimming patterns. For examlpe they swimm in one spot only or 80% of the time on they swimm on the top of the tank. Keep on top of top off's don't let the evaporation get bigger than one gallon per week.

What kind of filtration are you going to have?

It came with a cheapo filter so I will be using a penguin150b that I am using for my 10g FW at the moment. I'll be buying a HOT magnum to replace it but I need both of them to be in the FW first so the HOT can get it's bacteria started.

Just remeber to clean really good before putting it on the saltwater tank. Do you like the HOT magnum better than the penguin 250?

Also I am assuming you are going to use sand and "live rock".

Yeah the circulation isn't as good as the HOT canister HOB. Yes I stated FOWLR in my first post, but did not mention sand.

Wel let see if I can make up a list;

1.) Tank
2.) Lighting (flourecent are fine for FOWLR)
3.) Heater (50 watt)
4.) Filter (at least 150 GPH)
5.) Sand (about 10 lbs or maybe 5 lbs, depend on your taste)
6.) Rocks (just a few not a whole lot, depends on ow big the rocks are)
7.) Saltwater (around 1.025 SG or 35 ppt, also I keep 5 gallons handy)
8.) RO water (for top-off, I keep 5 gallons handy)
9.) Fish (as discussed)
10.) Shrimp (one or two, Scarlet Skunk, Camel, Peppermint or Red Blood Fire)
11.) Hermit Crabs (two or three, Scarlet Reef, Dwarf Blue Legg, Dwarf Red Tip, Dwarf Yellow Tip or Dwarf Zebra Hermit)
12.) Crabs (one or two depends on how many Hermit Crabs you have, Pom Pom, Porcelain Anemone or Emerald Mithrax)
13.) Snails (two or three, Turbo, Margarita, Astraea Conehead, Nassarius, Bumble Bee or Turban)
14.) Decorations (if you want them)
15.) refractometer (not really needed if you don't have any corals, but I recomend it, you never know when it can come in handy)
16.) API test kit (if you don't already have one, ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates and pH)
17.) Fish Food (different types out in the market, I use frozen, pellets, seaweed and flakes)
18.) powerhead (depends on how much water movement you get with the 150, also wether you get cyanobacteria or not)
19.) Thermometer (like the digital ones that have the prove in water and the meter out side)

I will keep thinking abut it just in case I missed something.

ATP
Fish Addict

Just to add some little equipments.

Actinic light is usually used to keep LR because it will increase coraline algae growth.

Sand= The less there are the better because the thicker you have, the more bio load it will hold and would eventually be a nitrate factory. I keep mine about 1 inch.

Actually would a 10g be better? I have an extra laying around since my Hammy died. It's not as long but at least it's more capacity.

For being your first tank, the 20L gallon tank would be better but the 10 gallon tank is better than the 6.6 gallon. The difference would be that the fish won't have too much length to work with, but it still will work fine. I love the ten's and 20's, they look really cool when settled. I will post a picture for you of one of my ten's later today. You could even use both of you want to have a refugium.

I was goint to post a picture, but here is a small video;
