First time saltwater tank

I have had freshwater tanks all my life and was always intimidated by saltwater and never tried it.
Now I am ready to take the plunge and give it a go.

I have a 120 gal tank I found on Craigslist, however it is not drilled. Came with 2 Emperor 400's but I would like to have a sump/refugium system. So I need some tips or advice because I don't know if the bottom is tempered glass or not.
Maybe someone knows how to tell?
I would like to make this tank a FOWLR setup at first then after a year or so start to add some inverts and such.
I also need some direction on where to find the bulkheads and all. How to build a sump/refugium and what size is needed for this tank. Also what kind of pumps and plumbing.
Water params and test kits...
Lighting.....
Water circulation issues....
Compatibility amongst the fishes
ect; ect....

I really need to know all there is to know so I can make this a successful venture.

Thanks,

Hello Gill. Here is a link you will find helpful. Sorry, I've never had salt tanks either. Best of luck. Hope you'll send some pictures once you're up and running.

WOW!! 120!! The options are endless!! So you want to eventually make the tank into reef? I would say a 55 or 30 gallon tank would be a good size sump. I would just get an overflow box. I never like the whole drilling process. Too risky for me. Get the API saltwater test kit. They have everything you need for a good start and FOWLR. If you plan on getting corals your parameter should be SG:1.023-1.026, pH-8.1- 8.4, nitrite 0, nitrate under 1, ammonia 0, calcium 350-450 PPM, phosphate under .02 ppm, magnesium 1250-1350 ppm, and iodine 0.06-0.10 ppm. If just want a FOWLR your SG can be from 1.020-1.025 and you don't have to worry about the calcium and such. AS for lighting, it all depends on what kind of corals you want. If your tank is under 24" deep, I would go with T-5s as they are cheap and let you keep most corals available. I think your tank should turnover 20-30 times per hour. In a 120 I would get some koralia powerheads. They are really good at creating great water movement. AS for the fish, agian it all depends on what you want to keep. I highly recommend some kind of clownfish, as they are tolerant of water conditions and are always fun to watch. Get sand not crush coral. I've bad reviews over crush coral. LR is very imporant!! You should get about 200-240 lbs of LR. Don't pass up on it. It will help a whole bunch. I would recommend you get a RO+DI unit. This will help you avoid getting ugly algae blooms. You will still get some, but not as bad. Well I think that all. HOPE TO SEEN IT SOON!!

I would recommend dual overflow boxes. At 120 gallons plus a 50 gallon sump you're going to want about 600-850 gallons per hour running through the sump system, so 2 overflow boxes rated at 500-800 GPH should work (2 would be for redundancy and extra surface skimming ability. Just put them on both sides, left and right, and you should not have any surface film and if one happens to lose suction, the other one can maintain it til you fix the problem). I'd recommend a Mag 12 as the return pump because at a 4' head (the height the hose runs from the pump over the back of the tank) it should be around the 600-700 gph flow rate.

A sump can be as big as you like it, and some tanks even have sumps bigger than the display itself. You need to decide what equipment you want in the tank and then make sure you design the sump that will house that equipment. You don't want 8" baffles if your skimmer is designed for 10" of water. For now, you could go ahead and set the tank up with sand (decide on a shallow 1" sand bed or a deep 4-5" sand bed), live rock (150-300lbs would be sufficient for a reef) and water (use RO/DI mixed with salt). You can use the HOB filters after a good bleach cleaning until you are ready to set up a reef. This would allow you to get comfortable with stuff like measuring S.G. and doing water changes while you research reef equipment.

What are the dimensions of the 120? Is it 6' long or 4' long? As the height will affect your lighting options.

Congrats on coming over to the dark side!
Marine depot has a ton of the plumbing you will need. I do agree with ro/di unit being a necessity. Also the homepage with the begainner info is great.
