is it alright to put gravel in a saltwater tank

or does it have to be sand?

Sand is easier to keep clean, which in turn makes it easier for you to control excess nutrients in your system. I use aragonite sand and would recommend it.

Gravel can act as a detrius trap for messy SW eaters and can be the cause of high nitrate (bad for a reef tank).

Yeah the gravel traps food underneath which makes it harder to clean. Sand is alos more natural for the fish.
