How small is too small?

I have a 5 gallon eclipse corner tank that I'd been using for a betta. It came with a filter and bio-filter. Is it possible to convert this to a salt water tank? Would it be possible to create a reef environment in a tank this small?

honestly i dont think so... im not a saltwater person but i highly doubt a 5 gal is big enough to do anything in except for raising a betta or as a hospital tank.. but thats just my opinion.

Well its not impossible, but its not a easy thing to do, and NO fish...
You would need a sump ( 10g + ), and do water changes more often, change the lighting, You would need to be able to maintain the tank at a temp ( not to easy with this volume of water unless you buy a chiller.. big $ )
I have seen some stunning micro nano tanks that have 1 coral with some LR. But these tanks are high maintenance and to set them up and keep them going isn't cheap.
Would not recommend it as a first SW Tank

I agree with the previous posters. You could do it, but man that would be a pain to maintain all the time if you had anything living in it. Save yourself the headache.

The maintenance would account for more of your time then enjoying the few things that you could have living in your tank.

Thanks for your input, I think you're all correct. I'm probably going to go fresh water and get a dwarf puffer.

is it space or money or both that you wanted to set the 5 gal. up? just curious. nano cubes are pricey but so nice cause they are small but you cant just put them anywhere thats the down side. other wise do you ever use craigslist? lots of people selling tanks!!!

Actually, I already had the 5 gal. I had a betta in it previously and would have loved to get another one, but my hubby wanted to try another type of fish.
