Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

T5 Ho Lighting

I have such a question.... I dont even know how to put it. I have a 65 gallon salt tank. I have one t5 HO GLO light with a 24 watt bulb in it. If wanted to add some coral to my tank would I just need to get another buld for this like I see they do go up to 80 watts or do I need to get another ballast or holder (I dont know what they are called) and another bulb of the same wattage I have now. I guess my question is how much light do I need to successfully have a couple of corals Any help is appreciated.

Depends on what type of corals you want to keep, for softies your lighting would be ok with the corals being placed high up in tank, for LPS SPS you would need much more lighting

The 80 watt bulb would depend on the strength of your ballast. You will need a few of those. Around 200 watts worth of lights.

SPS require metal halides
