Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

48" T5 HO six bulb on 110g reef

so after two months with my new 700 dollar light fixture, I noticed one morning that two tubes weren't lit. I went up to my place of purchase (pop) and no one who could do anything for me, $, was around. So I bought my two new tubes, but since one blue and one white were out I replaced the white with a orchid colored tube. I think I just broadernd my spectrum! bad spelling. anyhow, everything except my blue sponge is thriving. so it's two whites at 54w T5 HO, three blue actinic at 460 nm, and one purple actinic at 420 nm. Not very balanced, electrically speaking, but the tank likes it.

Hello Beachcomber. Glad to hear everyone is thriving and that you got your light fixed.

I really like the 420nm (violet) color bulbs over 460nm (blue). Your combo sounds about right to me.
