Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

what to look for in reef lighting

ok so i have my 30g hex tank setup with about 20 lbs of live rock and my fish ( see my tank info) i was thinking of trying some coral, but i need to upgrade my lighting. can I add coral to a tank already setup with fish and what do I look for in lighting. I just want some beginner coral . so what would be recommended to start with and any good sights for reading up on coral. I am in no hurry as i want to do this right and really want to read up on all the info first but any and all help is much appreciated thanks

These are the 2 I use. Not only for knowledge but I've bought from lucid and his frags of zoas are awesome! Being new myself I've started with zoas. Most are very hardy, medium light required and great for beginners, like myself

IMO I would switch tanks and make the 29g you have into a salty. 30g hex is pretty deep for corals.

you will need actinic/ daylight bulbs or Coralife 50/50. You'll need at least 3 watts per gallon. For your tank size (and shape) I would get PC lighting. T5's are a little bit long for a hex.
