Saltwater Aquarium Lighting Forum for saltwater aquarium lighting topics. Perhaps one of the most expensive components in a reef tank set up, lighting is a topic that should researched thoroughly by the hobbyist. The type of lighting you use will determine which corals you can keep. There are several options for lighting such as T5-HO, VHO, Metal Halide, Power Compact and more recently LED. The new LED set ups are rather expensive but they can save you money in the long run.

Combining Power Glo and Marine Glo OK?

I intend to keep some type of marine aquatic "plants" (I know it's more likely algae) and I wonder if combining three Power Glo (they work quite well for photosynthesis in FW even if only for their high lux) with three Marine Glo might work OK.

All are 24" F20T8 to be placed over a nano SW 10gal (20"Lx10"W footprint) that will run with a 5.5 (maybe 6) gal sump.

6 x 20W for 10 G? Why so many?
If memory serve, Power is white and Maringlo is actinic, Isnt it?

Such high total output seem way overkill. I though my 24", 55W PC (50/50 bublb) on 10 G was overkill!

Its not just the total output but also what kind of bulbs. Unless already had these bulb, would recommend to mix variety of bulbs + only one full time Actinic (for looks since for macros)

So four T-8 would work fine? I was trying to compensate for the "normal output" since I'm not using HO, VHO fluorescents (never mind MH).

I recently found out that the adequate lighting for 10gal in FW (planted) is a bit over 70W; the 2-3 WPG as mid end lighting rule of thumb seems to work for 20+gal tanks; I thought SW needed more light. I might be wrong (or lost with SW).
